Second Life - a new way to make money

    http://www.secondlife.com

    On a basic level - it's a 3d VR chat environment.

But what I like about it is that you can create art galleries, casinos, night clubs and anything else that would bring users and based on the user volume - the game creators pay you.

Also, you can charge people to visit your galleries, buy the images in your galleries to display in their VR homes and stream video like a VR movie theatre.

If you build a casino with poker tables, slot machines and any other game type, the user pays you per play based on the pre-set values. (Down side, if they win it comes out of your money)

They have free accounts so you can see if it is something you like and has been featured in Wired, USA TODAY and many other news sources. The user base is HUGE!

If you get into the 3d modeling aspect (in game) you can also open stores and people will buy your creations. (House, car, skins, textures, avatars and anything you can thing of.)

Another huge draw for the game is the action scripts. Users can have visual cyber-sex, make other users slaves and have them do your every command with a few text triggers or act out, play and even kill other users in game worlds build to emulate Star Wars, Star Trek, Gor and anything popular to attract new users.

At first you won't know many of the commands and building objects will piss you off but after 2 days you will have it down.

If you get into it at all - let me know and I'll meet you in game. Show you around.

    This sounds really cool!

So we can sell our video and still images on this VR world within the VR world of the net... mind blowing :francais:

You know anyone who's made good money with second life or is this just starting to take off?

It's out of beta and a friend who turned me onto it buys and sells land. He makes around $200usd a month just off land sales.

Yeah, my tech has been trying to get me into it since he found out. I am thinking about using it as the chat feature in some of our community sites, as well as using it for dvd sales, ppv, lots of stuff. It is really cool.

And as you say, it has endless marketing possibilities.

One of our models who is also a programmer for us has been into SecondLife for quite some time now... I swear it seems like he lives there more than here some of the time

He was telling me there are a handful of people who actually make a full-time income off of Second Life. Most of them buy and sell "land", but some of them make in-game items (art, etc) which they sell. I don't really know too much about it, but he was explaining how one can exchange the in-game funds for real life dollars through an exchange (not run by the Second Life people).

It's definitely intriguing, something I want to check out some day when I actually have a lil spare time

Sounds wicked... an exchange getting a commission of turning virtual money into real world money.. cool!

I went through the same thing with my tech. It got hard to get him to do anything because he became so obsessed by it. I would like to delve but I would never get anything done if I spent that much time in there.

But it is getting interesting, and definitely can be some profit potential in there I think. I cant really get into the idea of doing all the land buys and sells, and the art and stuff he was making and selling, but it is intriguing to think of it as a platform for sales of real world goods like dvds and such.

Seems to be the wave of the future. Imagine how much fun things like this forum would be in SL.

I saw a program on the Discovery Channel about these types of things a year or two back and you are right, a lot of people make a lot of money by selling virtual 'stuff'.

I personally dont get what all the fuss is about, at least if you are going to buy something, buy something you can actually measure in something other than pixels LOL

    Regards,

    Lee

    Very similar to EA's TheSIMS.

It is somewhat interesting, yet not something I'd spend much time on (for many years I dedicated a lot of time to RPGs, but I never was one for online play, let alone chat-based games).

    My life is fantastical enough.

Does sound a lot like the Sims - but with the money potential of Diablo. Stop by ebay and hit diablo into the search and you'll find hundreds of virtual game items for sale. Some guys make a lot of bling off finding items, listing them and then transfering them to the other players. They've even got bots that sit on the chat forums and constantly announce the domains you can browse and shop at for Diablo gear.

Diablo ... all the time I lost to that experience.

Oh yes, serious gamers will spend oodles of cash on game items. I have a group of friends that play many online RPG, and the amount of money they spend, for items such as money (???), is strange (to me).

I honestly believe we are all junkies. All that seperates us is the drug of choice (religion, spirituality, fitness, fashion, porn, caffeine, tobacco, food, pop, information, sex, narcotics, lies, money, etc) and our honesty about the addiction.

Hmm ... I guess that means we are all dealers, also.
