Stephen Harper is a trained economist....(Masters degree) which is frankly something that wouldn't be bad for any country. He's pretty conservative, but I do not think that anyone will be able to create a functioning government in Canada while simultaneously exacting the kinds of sweeping social conservative policies his opponents imagine.

BBC Radio had a number of broadcasts on the election this weekend. The Conservative Party's primary campaign promise (as per BBC) is to reduce Canada's notoriously high national sales tax.

I also would think it would be most helpful for everyone if the US and Canada improved relations. Also, the Economist has written much about Canada's regional areas developing growing estrangement. Obviously people remember Quebec's razor thin referendum to leave the country [hence the Liberal party's subsequent scandel], but people in Alberta aren't feeling the spirit a strong union either. And there is nothing wrong with recognizing the shortcomings of Canada's health care system.

Hey if anything Canada, a country which has been famous for "boring politics," actually seems to have some interesting things going on for once.

To be honest, I really do think that the Canadian way of life is in danger here... and no amount of you pretending that electing a Conservative Government is a good idea is going to change that.:boo:
since yr profile says 'West Hollywood' for location I wonder about your definition of Canada

but pray, do tell... in black and white how is the 'Canadian way of life'(such an American term in and of itself) in danger

Well everyone is entitled to their opinions, but to see Gays actually rooting for the Reform Party that wishes to abolish same sex marraige including using the Not WIthstanding Clause to get its way is rather odd.

Stephen Harper has spoken to the Ultra Conservative Think Tank in the USA calling them a 'GUIDING LIGHT' and that is what you prefer over the 'stinking Liberals" who told George Bush to go shove it? Amazing.

Will the sky fall in, nah, it won't but Canada will drastically change if we have elected a Harper government.

As for being an economist, well if the man can't add he can't be a very good economist. His so called 2% cut of the GST over 5 years will put approx. $250 in the pocket of a person earning $10 an hour wage. The Liberal tax cut on the personal income tax rate would give that same person $2000 in savings... which makes more economic sense?

Harper wants to give every Canadian with a child under 6 $1200 a year for daycare expenses. Oh and it is Taxable Income so take off 16% of that by the way. The 'stinking Liberals" on the other hand have put in place an agreement with ALL Provinces for a national daycare program.

Under Harper, medical insurance for most Canadians will rise at least to $350 a month based on a two tier system while existing costs are under $100 per person, again I suppose if you enjoy paying out money that much, you would vote for the Tories.

By the way, these same Tories are the one's who also want to criminalize homosexuality, want to criminalize abortion in all cases. Sound familiar? Should but I guess that's okay if that is what you want.

But whatever the views, we'll find out soon enough.

    oh.. you must be new.

I'm Jasun.. Hard-Boiled, Hot-Blooded Canadian... Half-Newfie and raised in New Brunswick. Lived in Toronto before moving down to LA a year ago.. not even.. about 11 months ago.

And trust me, there's a HUGE difference between living here an dliving there.

Canada is a very unique place where the haves and have-nots have managed to live together relatively peaceful alongside the Separatist and the Federalist, the Newfie and the BC-Boys.

I got in a Motorcycle accident the other day, and as I was wisked into the hospital, I was asked how i'd be paying for my treatments. It was like being hit in the face with a cold fish, and being from Down East, I know what that's like.

Harper has been a supporter of Two-tiered-health care, an opponent of Immigration and multiculturalism (In toronto, only half of my friends were white, the rest came from many of the different communites who make up a country like Canada. one of the things that makes us so cool... in the US, I think I've met two Asian men, one black man and three Hispanic men who weren't serving me something), and an opponent of Equal rights for gays and lesbians.

Harper has praised the US over and over and over again as he suggests that we roll over and play dead.

that alone should make you kinda scared.

    But it doesn't.

    sad.

OH.. let's not forget his olive branch to the gay community.. that he wouldn't exclude gay parents from tax credits for their children..

the fact that he thought that would be an option should terrify you.

I find your comment on knowing non-whites interesting.....

Hmmm.... maybe that is because either you are living in West Hollywood, or working in the California porn industry. Consider moving to a racially diverse state like Texas. In Austin, the county is 30% hispanic and 8% black. San Antonio is much the same.

If you go to Dallas or Houston, the black population is a larger percentage, and the hispanic is slightly lower.

I know everyone loves to pick on Texas, but I will say that compared to many other cities I've visited... especially in the north and the east... we are all significantly more integrated.

not sure.. my neighbourhood is pretty much all white.

And I hang out in lots of places with lots of people, but nobody seems to integrate here.. maybe that's a California thing, but that makes very little sense to me.

Either way, I'd like it if people were a bit more mixed here.

Well, I don't know about all that, but I can say that I've slept with a lot more Asians and Latinos that I ever would have if I'd stayed in Pennsylvania! Does that count??? LOL!
