Companion for hire is becoming common.

Many people are unable to make acquaintances &/or (lack of time &/or patience for the ritual) friends, so paying someone for the gift they have to offer only makes sense. It is no different from paying to attend a lecture, symposium etc, in my eyes.

Some do confuse it with hooking, but that is due to ignorance (not an insult, just the truth).
