I think the industry has figured out what we indie film makers have known for a long time: the market is in the home DVD (or VOD) sales.

I went to see Brokeback at one of the most famous Hollywood Theaters, and I actually was a bit intimidated about seeing a gay story in such a large pubic place, with so many strangers. The upside of seeing it at a famous Hollywood theater: A display of the actual movie costumes in the lobby!

As much as I would like to see Josh Hartnett, or Matthew McConaughey, or any number of Hollywood Hunks naked, I'd rather do that in my own home, than in a theater with 1000 strangers.

I think Basic Instinct 2's dismal sales tells us that Hetero's think the same way.
