Mark Foley Correction
Actually for the record - and to address to AVN's news report mischaracterization -
Rep. Foley was not, or ever has been, a "conservative Republican."
Not only was Foley pro choice, but he also always sponsored GLBT civil rights legistation.
For example, this Summer he voted No on the amendment to the US Constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, which is certainly an act of guts in this day and age.
Foley always co-sponsored of the Employment Non Discrimination Act, and he voted against the Hefley amendment that would have repealed Clinton's executive order prohibiting dicrimination based on sexual orientation in the Executive Branch.
Foley also voted No in July on HR 4411 that famously prohibits Internet gambling in the United States, a bill we have discussed here in GWW as evil.
Now, I'm not condoning or endorsing Foley's actions here. But it is obvious that AVN's labeling is not particularly sophisticated.
Plus, unlike the governor of New Jersey he wasn't cheating on his wife and kids. Foley never was publically "out", but everyone knew about it... especially in his district. (he is a single, umarried restaurantuer, duh...)
You can criticize him for that, and you can criticize him for joining the anti chid porn bandwagon, or acting with poor judgement, but he was not a social conservative.
Steve
