I don't think it's snobby at all to look after your body and want to look good. Sure everyone eats fast food, and if you say that you don't, you are a dirty dirty fibber. It isn't a multi billion dollar industry because people shy away from it and would rather have a wheat grass protein shake instead of a burger that someone else makes. Or a salad. Or even a soda.

Where do you go after the bar or a night of drinking? Jack in the Box or Trader Joes?

My point exactly! I could have used a less provocative word than "snob" but why should I? Everyone is professing to be such health nuts when I'm pretty sure they are not. I guess it's our tendency to wish we are better than we really are. In my mind... I eat healthy, work out 5 days a week and don't smoke.

And yes, you do have a right to be mad at McDonald's for lying to everyone. But you should also know better. When was the last time ANY corporation told you the truth?

I don't find myself being snobish just because I don't eat at fast foods (really, who eats there ??) It has absolutely nothing to do with being health nuts, but I can't imagine myself eating cheesburgers and fries every day, when on the other hand I just love home cooked meals... adn thankfully I have lots of time to do it...

I always get a kick out of people trying to be "health conscious" and still they go to McD. I saw this one person order two Big Macs, a Supersize Fry, and a Large DIET Coke. Like that one diet thing is gonna negate the whole slew of "food" they just ate.

Anyways, they have actually done the renovations to several McD around here and it's actually pretty nice. This is a college town, though, so all the students are always looking for a place to go study and eat at the same time. Maybe with any luck, it will be a good thing.

BTW Rocky, they are still trying out the JBX in some areas. In Dallas they have a couple and they're ok. I used to work for JIB, so they told me about that stuff and it's a great concept, it just wasn't really implemented very well.

They tried it in San Diego, Ben, but it didn't pan out. The thing about the fancy Jack in the Box is that at least they tried to offer better food. It wasn't the same old dreck that they've been serving forever.

And I would be lying if I said I didn't love McDonald's fries, hee hee.

McDonald's is a national past-time, just like baseball. It's as American as Mom and apple pie. It will NEVER go out of business, at least not as long as we are alive. It's here to stay. People love it. It's comfort food. When I'm sick with a cold, I want a hambuger Happy Meal, because that's what my parents used to get me when I was home sick from school. I will probably never stop eating at McD's completely, but I have learned to do it only in moderation, and to "reward" myself (yes, I understand the irony in using that word in this case) by only allowing myself to have it once in a blue moon.

It's like doing coke. I do it only once every few years, then don't touch it again for several years. Of course I know it's "bad" for me, but there you go.

Food and sex used to be two things that I would use as "crutches" to either feel better about myself, or feel worse about myself. They can go either way. People who are depressed get into a rut and they eat and eat and eat saying it makes them feel better, but actually they know it's really about trying to make themselves feel worse about themselves. Same with sex. I used to tell myself, "If that guy wants me, that must mean I'm hot," and I thought that was a good thing. Then I realized, "Wait, he only wanted to fuck me, and now he's done with me, and I'm totally back where I started again. And damn, we really should have used a rubber."

People use food and sex as tools of self-destruction, and unless you have adopted a COMPLETELY healthy outlook on your self and a strong sense of self-identity, it's far too easy to fall back into old habits when it comes to these two things. Of course, it's totally possible for people to eat fast food and have casual sex without them being "negative" things. The trick is really having a healthy outlook on yourself and doing these things only in moderation. Because the truth is, fast food is tasty, and casual sex is fun. Why not partake if you're responsible about it?

In regard to our discussion on the healthiness of fast food, this just in:

KFC to Switch to No-Trans-Fat Frying Oil

NEW YORK (Oct. 30) - KFC, a unit of Yum Brands Inc., on Monday said it will switch to a cooking oil with no trans fat in all its U.S. fried-chicken restaurants by April 2007.

The move comes as many local governments, including new York City, are looking at banning the artery-clogging trans fats.

Yum Brands joins hamburger chain Wendy's International Inc. in a move to cut its use of the artery clogging oil at a time when fast-food restaurants have come under criticism that their food contributes to obesity.

McDonald's Corp. promised in 2002 to reduce trans fats in some of its products. While the chain has introduced healthier foods -- such as apple and walnut salads -- it has yet to convert its oils entirely, saying that it has not found an alternative that works as well.

Yum said it would start using low linolenic soybean oil, a zero trans-fat cooking oil. The change will take effect in all 5,500 U.S. restaurants following a two-year trial to identify cooking oils with the same characteristics as the trans fats.

Once the transition is complete, KFC's most popular products, including its fried chicken, will contain zero grams of trans fat, the company said. Other products that will contain zero grams of trans fats will include Crispy Strips, Wings, Boneless Wings, Honey BBQ, Buffalo and Crispy Snacker Sandwiches, Popcorn Chicken, Twisters and Potato Wedges.

The U.S. food industry in general and many fast-food restaurants in particular has been under increasing pressure to offer healthier products in the wake of increasing incidence of obesity in the country, especially among children and adolescents.

"The fast food industry as a whole has been under some pressure to make this change, so it is really in their benefit to be proactive," Arun Daniel a senior sector analyst at ING Investment Management, said.

But, at least in the near term, any increase in customer traffic at KFC is likely to be offset by the cost of making the change, he said.

"If anything, it could impact them negatively on the margins," Daniel said. ING Investment Management owns about 600,000 Yum shares.

Trans fat increases the low-density lipoprotein, or the so-called bad cholesterol, content of food. Starting January 1, 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration made it mandatory for all food products to list their trans-fat content.
