If it's true what I've heard about Vista it's definitely a good reason for me to finally go Linux. And it's not the bugs I'm worried about.

    What is it called, Bass?
I looked at OpenSuse 10.2 Live DVD the other day and I liked the sliding start-menu... but other than that I guess I am just not used to it and accustomed to where Windows puts its stuff ... I would love to check out a Macintosh just for comparison

From what I've heard and seen... it's Windows XP combined with a Macintosh look and Yahoo Widgets. The bug list could be it's own book right now, although most of them are not security related for once.

Give them six months... then wait longer

    Yeah

Yes I am using Vista - however its weird that when I turn off my monitor (Acer AL2216W) when I leave my workstation and arrive back and turn it on, it can't find a signal... so from now on I can't let the monitor sleep or turn it off then I have to hard boot the computer.

I'm thinking this is a graphics card issue but its not that old, perhaps a little over a year or so.

If not for that problem, I would give vista good grades...

    1. hit the Windows key and type the name of the program, and it runs... so much easier than before.
    2. More easy to find programs or files in the clutter of things
    3. Searching is on light-speed.
    4. Less hangs

    Cons:

    1. Photoshop runs weird, but works... hangs when you transfer files from Photoshop to ImageReady...
    2. Some shareware incompatibility issues, but can be resolved with the Compatibility option (Right click on the exe file and run properties to change the compatibility settings.)

I have not been impressed with Vista at all.

Keep in mind that this is a very DRM friendly OS. It will downgrade all of the audio and video you play if you don't have DRM chip on your motherboard and you try to play protected content, and some say any content at all.

The DirectSound has been stripped so you can't record audio that's playing on the system, it now passes thru some DRM piping instead. And I have had to restart the Windows Audio service twice daily since I started running vista because my sound keeps disappearing for some reason

Windows Media Player on my box outright refuses to play a lot of my WMV and MPEG-2 files which probably has something to do with the embeded DRM

ATI's boss has stated on the record that compliance with Vista DRM is costly for the company and all costs incurred from having to support the drivers and hardware will without any doubt be passed down to consumers, i.e. higher prices for graphics cards and motherboards.

And then there is the Software Protection Platform.
If Windows Vista decides for whatever reason that it doesn't like your license key, or that you didn't activate WIndows, or any changes to the OS it thinks are bad, not connecting to MS after change in hardware, it will disable everything on Windows Vista but the browser which conveniently points you to Microsoft's web site to buy a new license and will log you off after 60 minutes and hold your data hostage until you buy a new license key.

This is especially troublesome for store bought PCs that come with OEM Vista.

CPU usage is also increased, I noticed I went from 2-4% idle on XP to 8-16% when idling on Vista because of the DRM which I believe checks every 30 seconds for compliance.

Computer World has a very thorough explanation of Vista's DRM
