Thread: Testing New Hosts

    I can't really follow or understand why you would need more than one host unless you were really trying to be geographically diverse for redundancy or global latency issues, but it doesn't seem like that would be all that important for hosted video/photos. Just my .02.

    I should think chilihost or any other good host such as ours national-net.com would be able to take care of you as a one-stop shop. It would be a nightmare for me to try and work with 3 different hosts.

    Regarding your question, you can do something called round-robin DNS that would allow you to host one domain in two different locations. You'd have to get your primary DNS host to agree to set that up I believe.

    I sent you a PM about my thinking behind this.

    You can do your DNS thorough your domain registrar if you use one like Enom that offers its own robust DNS. Then, if you change hosts, you never have to change DNS servers, only update the entries with new IP addresses.

    You can also serve different parts of your site from different servers by using canonical domain names, like members.sitename.com tour1.sitename.com, etc.

    For example, we serve our movie galleries from one server dedicated just to that purpose that has an unmetered 30Mbps connection. But our DVD studio website is on a different server, and the customer never even notices he's going to a different server for the actual serving of the galleries.

    Also, a number of webmasters store their tours on one server, their members area on another, and their billing/join pages on another. If carefully thought out, you can maximize your bandwidth utilization on each server without going over, and then, as your traffic grows, you can load-balance traffic between different servers.

    So, as Luke said, if you have a really good host, they will discuss and walk you through everything and make it happen for you.

    THax Chip, that really does help me out, and you even taking it farther than my original thinking always extremely helpful.

    I was just thinking about all these hosted videos I was going to be offering, and was thinking that I do not want them on the same server as my tour, or members area yet having them on the same domain would be ideal. Also their is varying pricing for hosting I can take advantage of with this configuration. But seems you/others have taken this farther that I had though about yet, seems again I am always playing catch up, but its good that it sounds like I am on the right track.

    Max,

    you could do subdomains and have them map to a different server

    e.g. maxpower.com maps to 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
    fhg.maxpower.com -> to 192.168.0.3
    fhm.maxpower.com -> 192.168.0.4

    This way you could have the same domain as you wanted to but with subdomains.

    Luke, is there a setup that allows subdirectories to point to different IPs?
    maxpower.com -> 192.168.0.1
    maxpower.com/fhg -> 192.168.0.2

    0.02 euro cent
    :-D

    The varying pricing is a large part of the reason we originally separated things out.

    Our gallery server is on a provider with dirt cheap but still mostly reliable bandwidth. It occasionally runs a little slow, but it's never been down.

    Our membership areas, tours, and billing are on servers with a much larger ISP with a more robust network that's totally rock solid and, in 3 years, has barely even burped.... but their bandwidth is about double the cost of the other provider.

    So this way, we maximize what we can provide to our affiliates, while also maximizing reliability to our paying members.

    Ya that’s my thinking exactly man, besides the bandwidth hosted videos, and galleries could run up is unsettling. :hmm:

    Yes, its easy....as I have said already in this thread, you can do just about anything you want with a good quality host. Max, get your ass over to a quality host and they will set this all up for you exactly how you want it. You have spent loads of time on this, time which you could have spent earning money.

    I tell ya what, email me exactly what you are looking for including disk, processor, bandwidth and price. I will put together a custom quote for you which includes full server management so that you don't have to continually stuff around with these issues, instead you can focus on making money.

    cheers,
    Luke

    THax man, I am sure at some point I will want to switch my main host over to you, but right now I have to give my current hosts the first shot at making me happy. After all some of them I have been with for many years now.

    I am sure we can talk more when I really have a better idea of what I will need as far as bandwidth goes, right now I am just trying to cover my ass. You have a very good reputation as well as many people in the industry that I respect use you your service. I just don’t want to waist any of your time, until I for sure what I will need.

    Ya I sure you will, but I need to grow into a few things, and need to learn exactly what I will need. Just hate to make agreements about things that could change over night right now man.
