I think we need to nuke Iran, not now, but later. North Korea too. Executing porn producers is problematic, but as long as they give them enough warning so they can leave the country and start smuggling porn into Iran, then I'm okay with it.
I most worry that we give nations like Iran and North Korea respect and are willing to negotiate with them once they have nuclear weapons. That sends a clear sign that developing nuclear weapons is a good idea. I say once they test a little one kiloton nuclear weapon to prove they have one, we drop a 20 megaton nuke right on top of their testing site, and send them a cease and desist demand. They've already cleared the site for us, so we can hit it without causing too much death and destruction, and it's a great way to upstage their moment of glory. It's like pulling out a howitzer in response to someone pulling a pellet gun on you.
With our current policies, if they test a nuclear weapon, we'll give them all the recognition and respect they want despite their oppressive policies.

James, as I was looking at responses to a few different posts I'd made today I found your post along side of a fun post on another board where someone posted a link to a band just because it had the number 127 in the url (it was part of a game). I took a moment to see who this band was and read their bio:

Founded in 2001 by a group of young Tehran artists and art students, 127 has found itself at the center of progressive cultural change in Iran. The band's music melds Iranian melodies and jazz with an alternative sound. The band's lyrics tell of the frustrations and joys of life, somehow managing to speak of their cultural time and place, while simultaneous reflecting universal frustrations of isolation, frustration, and hope. 127 is a 5 piece band -guitar,piano,trombone,bass and drums. the group has become a lighning-rod for international media attention. Through humerous articles and broadcasts in the western media, the group's website receives thousands of hits a month from a growing international listeners. ...

Before you go on about "nuking" a country because of it's political leaders and policies, take a moment to think about the people who live in that country. And think again what our country looks like from the outside. The US can be seen as an aggressive country that attacks others (without much reason, some would say) and who regularly denies basic civil rights to many of it's own people.

    Don Mike,
That's why I advocate dropping a nuke on their own nuclear testing site. They already cleared it, hopefully at least. I'd like to hit it while the ground at ground zero is still molten. Preferably we'd hit it with a twenty megaton bunker buster, placing the blast underground so as to minimize the blast radius. Also, it might be noted that the fallout from Russian and US thermonuclear warheads is fairly negligible, as unconsumed nuclear fuel is lost potential explosive power and the fission fusion cycle tends to burn more uranium or plutonium.
My preferred impact is political, leaving civilians out of it. A nuclear test is generally a threat to one's enemies. A government is likely to bask in the national pride following a nuclear test for some time. Upstaging that government in a flashy nonlethal way might be the best way to cut the public support for their nuclear program. Given a situation where I might have my finger on the trigger I'd like to sit down with a lot of intelligence agency people, international political analysts, and military figures before making it policy. It's a good idea theoretically to expend 20 megatons without hurting anyone in response to a threat, but so was being greeted as liberators, so I don't think I'd rush into it or limit my opinions to yes-men.
In Iran's case, their fielding of a nuclear weapon would probably bring a much more terrifying response from Israel, which might make my conjectures a moot point.
My preferred present day philosophy would be to lift sanctions on Iran, and do my best to deliver satellite TV and unfiltered internet, letting market forces erode their oppression. I'd also like to apologize for past infractions against Iran, like the thing were we installed the Shah. Nothing hurts an oppressive regime like taking away the great satan they're united against.
So yes, greatest respect to the Iranian people, but strong shows of force might keep us from having more nuke having nations in the future, and that's worth some political risk. We're presently outside of North Korea's range, but I'm sure South Korea and Japan aren't too thrilled about nuclear weapons being wielded by their erratic oppressive neighbor.
I've clearly given too much thought to destabilizing oppressive regimes and halting nuclear proliferation today.
For the record, I also would have tried to buy Iraq from Saddam Hussein before invading. Not that I supported invading it, but it wouldn't have hurt to have made the offer, before tearing the country apart.
I think I'm derailing this thread.

I read this thread and couldn't believe my eyes someone wants to nuke a country. OK the Iran government doesn't like us but the people do! Their is a big underground for anything western. You just can't Nuke any part of any country, or maybe we schold call you president Bush?

You know we had a full agreement with North Korea but the president broke a treaty that President Bill Clinton had with them. If Bush didn't step in not only would NK have power and be able to heat its people in winter but they wouldn't have a nuclear power plant that turns out the material to make bombs. Thank the president for NK.

    Dang Ponyboy,
You're pretty insensitive to political crackpots. Don't be a knee-jerk liberal and stop reading at the word nuke. If they're going to scrape a piece of their land with nuclear fire why not join in. Given, it's not as good an idea as trying to help them shift to from oil to wind and solar as a power source, which might make more sense for them economically as nuclear isn't cheap, but it's not altogether bad. There may be other holes in the plan as well, but I'm willing to change course if they're persuasive.
Still, Ponyboy, when else might you have a chance to nuke Iran? Why even have nukes if you're not going to nuke anything? That's like buying a delicious cheese and not eating it because it's fattening. Why would you even do a thing like that? Don't be a cheese waster.
I'm going to back away from the whole argument as to whether North Korea is Bush's fault. I don't know the facts there well enough. I would say that Bush can't take full credit for Kim Jong Il being a crazy dictator. On the other hand, there was some conjecture that North Korea might be able to build a missile that could reach the west coast. That would give Bush every reason to antagonize North Korea. If Los Angeles or San Francisco were nuked, millions of liberal votes would be incinerated, and Bush would have a resurgence of fear based power, just like after September 11th. Perhaps he derailed things on purpose?
The important thing is, I didn't suggest nuking any Iranian people. In fact some of my friends are Iranian(Note: That's a vicious lie, James has a Moroccan friend and an Egyptian friend, but no Iranian friend, however it's a familiar turn of phrase in arguments like this, and consequently essential). The second most important thing is not to hold knee-jerk views. Remain a thinking person. I'm not saying that you'll agree with me, and I'm not sure I'd agree with me given all the facts in such a complex situation, but at least think, "What would that be like?" Otherwise only your upbringing separates you from knee-jerk religious fundamentalists.

"You're pretty insensitive to political crackpots."

    "Don't be a knee-jerk liberal"

I am and proud of it! I'm also a life member of the NRA. I'm proud the be a bleeding heart Liberal! My mother raised me right to try and understand the other side.

We have no right to tell other countries that they can't have any kind of power, and yes there is a very small movement in this country to bring back nuclear power.

"Still, Ponyboy, when else might you have a chance to nuke Iran?"

I don't want to Nuke any country. Make love not war.

"I would say that Bush can't take full credit for Kim Jong Il being a crazy dictator."

Both leaders are crazy! But Kim is a little more and if bush left things alone jim wouldn't be shooting of missiles to get the west to look at him and his country.

"If Los Angeles or San Francisco were nuked, millions of liberal votes would be incinerated,"

No one is going to Nuke the west coast, you have more change from the missing Russian nuclear weapons. Maybe bush will do it and blame it on Iran?

Great leaders bring their people together. Bush is not a great leader. We all know his infamous phrases "if you're not with us you're against us" "the axis of evil" the list goes on.

The wonderful thing about GWW is that we are a cohesive Gay community that respects eachothers diversity. What holds us together at GWW? The answer is simple, Dick. We love Dick. Seperated by thousands of miles, or polar opposite opinions, Dick has the power to bring us all together. It dosn't matter how you like your Dick, where the Dick comes from, what the Dick smells like or how the Dick tastes, as long as it's Dick. There's something about Dick, perhaps deep within, something that's sticky and makes all of us smile. God bless GWW and most of all, God bless Dick!

My apologies, Ponyboy. If I said anything hurtful to you. If forget that not everyone takes the things I say with a grain of salt. I thought you'd realize not to take me too seriously when I accused you of being a cheese waster. What can I say, I like to play with hypothetical situations.

I am a bit serious as to it being politically advantageous for Bush to have a west coast city nuked, or at least would have been. Right now he's so far gone that it would probably dig him deeper into his hole.
I don't think Bush is crazy. I think he works to get people to think he's crazy or stupid to throw them off. I think he's very smart and very evil.

I'm not an NRA member. I really don't have anything to shoot at. I'd consider hunting environmentally destructive wild pigs, but it seems kind of expensive for pork. Also, I'm kind of hesitant to shoot things anyway. I also don't live in a dangerous area, and probably wouldn't own a gun if I did because I'd be more of a danger to myself and others.

I know there's a renewed interest in nuclear, but it's still crazy expensive and only affordable with massive government subsidies, at least from what I understand. I also disagree with the way our nuclear plants don't create weapon grade plutonium as a byproduct, and hence we can't recycle our nuclear waste and use it again like the French do. Does anyone care if we have more weapon grade plutonium? We can already blow up everyone twice over, who cares if we have the potential to make more. If we had breeder reactors we wouldn't have all the waste. (Typical, a straight guy promoting breeder reactors!)
If we poured as much money into solar and wind we could have power forever, while even nuclear fuel will run out and has to be ripped out of the earth.

So be a bleeding heart, see if I care. I'd personally like to see everyone in the world given the same opportunities that the US upper middle class gets. However, that doesn't mean that I can't want a throne built from the skulls of corrupt politicians who sold out their own people for their own selfish reasons. I just feel that when a country makes a decision, that decision reflects the leadership of the country, not the people, so equating the will of a nation to the will of its people is often incorrect. Obviously you wouldn't want people in other countries to view all of our policies as the will of all our people.

We should argue politics again sometime Ponyboy.

Woah there, I seem to have become a far more controversial figure than I'd like to be. My tendency to discuss serious manners in a tremendously light-hearted way would appear to have outed me as the strangest guy in the room. What can I say? I have penchant for creative nonsense and radical solutions to very real problems.
It would seem that the easiest solution would be to backpedal out and claim "Just kidding", but I cannot disavow myself of my crackpot conjectures. That would be dishonest.
Ponyboy, a cheese waster is someone who wastes cheese. I would think that obvious. It was used in a simple shift of analogies, flipping your from being anti-nuke to someone who throws away good cheese. It's much the same as transitioning people critical of the president to people who hate our troops. Clearly our senses of humor are very different.

I'm looking for a little understanding. I advance and seriously consider controversial theories. I prefer to bring up original ideas and I don't really have a lot of lines I don't think should be crossed in conversation. However, the unfiltered version of James seems to be getting me in trouble and garnering a lot more enmity than I'd like. So, I'll try to hold back in the future, and try not to discuss such serious issues in such a light hearted way.

Tropixxx, I apologize, for I am a poor representative of Orange County. First off I have a strong tendency towards anti-consumerism and am altogether fashion averse. Second, I grew up in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Indonesia and went to college in San Luis Obispo, CA. So I haven't even spent that great a proportion of my life in Orange County. Not that I don't love the opulence and variety of Orange County, a place that strives to be everything to everybody, but I'm just not the best representative.
