Any lawyer you pick needs to be someone that you feel you can trust. Find someone that understands start-up companies. Most lawyers do have high retainers and fees that make legal advice nearly prohibitive for new companies.
Referrals are a good way to find out a little about your potential lawyer, and ask the referrer what their experience has been with the attorney they are referring. Has the attorney done work or given advice to that person in the past?
Next, you need to know what you want from an attorney. The attorney that can help you set up a new adult entertainment company is probably not the same person as an attorney that you will call if you have a criminal charge. What are the attorney's experiences, what are the resources of the firm? A small company does not need a large law firm with a diverse group of attorneys, and a large company really needs a full service law firm.
An attorney is someone you should plan to build a long and trusting relationship with, so spend some time and make a wise choice.
