maybe it's a way of asking "indirectly" are you "top or bottom?"

Yeah, I thought of that, too, but it's just stupid, fueling the stereotype that to be a bottom is less than a man, submissive, feminine ... why not just ask if you're a top or bottom rather than attaching some judgement to it?
