My Dell Inspiron laptop is about 9 months old and runs XP. I tend to get a new laptop every 1.5 to 2 years. I no longer own any desktop computers, they are too bulky when you move around as much as I do.

slaxxx - my partner had a Toshy, it lasted less than 12 months before we essentially had to throw it away as it was rusting out and the disk was giving more errors than not. I would not recommend a Toshiba to anyone.

Ouch chili, yeah I'm not really a fan- that was not a good purchase. While I haven't had problems like that, it came with so much bloatware and such a strange driver configuration, it was one thing after another.

I didn't use that as my main computer though, as I prefer to work on desktops. Before the Mac Pro I had a Dell Precision workstation which was pretty good, only problem I ever had with it was Dell's motherboard being overly picky about RAM.

I only suggest Sony! My current sony laptop is almost a year old. My other sony laptop is almost 2 years old and my sony desktop is 5 years old. No problems on any of them ever!

MyLifeUncut - Windows Media Encoder won't run on macOS/x so you would have to run bootcamp or parallels and install Microsoft OS also to make it run.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

I don't think that will work. It has to be the windows media encoder, he streams 24x7 "webcam" to our servers, which runs windows media. He isn't reading an encoded file or opening an encoded file.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

XP on all my machines, but I am not one for always upgrading either. I am cheap. so my newest desktop is a few years old. Monitor is new though.

Plan on upgrading to a new desktop by end of the year, if I am convinced that its a viable need. I'd rather spend the money on really important stuff, like toys for the wife... :kickcan:

I'll keep my Windows computer if nothing but just to run the encoder.
