The End of Porn?
The federal government is proposing regulations that would effectively kill adult social-networking sites. This is being done under the guise of fighting child pornography. right now, social networking sites don't collect i.d. for the explicit pics they post nor do sites that post user submitted explicit pics or videos. and at the risk of being yelled at, how do social networking sites know that the people who send in their pics are over 18 without i.d.? i know there was a case recently where some guy met a girl on a social networking site, banged her brains out and it turned out the girl was 14. so minors DO put up their profiles and pics...

Well I know one thing if I was ever a parent I would be outraged. I do believe there should be ways to keep kids out of this kind of stuff. I mean even if it means making less money for me or anyone else. I think it is important to make sure kids remain kids until they are grown adults. I know when I was 14 I may have had sexual urges and I was curious but what I really needed was friends,role models, stability,a good support system and consistancy in my life as well as to finish school cause I think that is very important and all I got was older gay men trying to take advantage of me and have sex with me and in the beginning it really damaged me thankfully I smart enough to be able to come out of it.

A huge part of helping me through things was CHIP from gaybucks if it was not for him I probably wouldnt be the kelly taylor that I know now But anyways Im getting off on another subject.

Oh yeah thanks once again basschick for the INFO I need to brush up on my 4472 info.. This will give me something fun to do for awhile.. I love this board it is such an informative place with such bright individuals.

As for this X-tube posting (which is reprinted from something circulating around among all the adult networking sites... Arrgh!

I get so annoyed with all these social networking sites saying the sky is falling.

The only change the new 2257A requires is that SEXUALLY EXPLICIT PHOTOS (and simulated sex, which will almost certainly get struck down) require whomever is displaying them (i.e., xpeeps, xtube, etc.) to maintain proper records to ensure that the person depicted in the photos is, in fact, over 18.

Nobody is trying to shut down adult social networking sites. Frankly, I am IN FAVOR of some level of regulation of adult networking sites, because I see rampant cases of kids 15, 16, 17 years old posting naked pics of themselves on so-called adult networking sites. I've personally reported at least a dozen such profiles to the site owners, some of which respond promptly and remove the profiles or images, and some of which don't.

Likewise, identity theft on these sites (posting a pic of someone else and claiming it's you) is rampant.

All the regulations would do is require adult networking sites that allow sexually explicit images to get ID from the people who are depicted in the images, and to be able to track the ID to the image. This ensures that pics displayed are of people who are of age, and, as a nice side benefit, dramatically increases the likelihood that the person in the pic is actually the person making the profile.

Yes, the sites that have had a free ride allowing anyone to post naked pics without any age verification will suffer somewhat. But adult networking sites will continue to exist, naked pics of people will continue to be available on these profiles, life will go on as we know it.

You didn't hear anyone complaining from these groups in May 2005 when the 2257 regs were published, even though the regs then said exactly the same thing they do now. And they certainly don't seem to care that membership sites have to keep records.

It makes sense to me that, if *anyone* is required to keep records, it would be the sites that allow anyone to post pics and don't go through any sort of verification; adult site operators, content producers, and studios have been required to keep proper records since 1995 and are aware of their responsibilities. To exclude adult networking sites seems while still requiring adult industry sites to maintain records seems pretty disingenuous.

As someone who posts rather "private" pics of himself on some of these social networking sites, I am not exactly thrilled to have to turn over my personal information to the owners if need be, but I also agree with Chip that there needs to be SOME kind of regulation. I guess we'll see how it all plays out. It's not like I can't always email those private pics to the people who want to see them. The sky isn't falling, and even if social networking sites did come to an end, it certainly wouldn't be "the end of porn."

I would not be hurt to see the end of FREE PORN, but I dont want to see it die due to government interference.

From the first day those free flicks popped up, it was quite clear to me that it wouldn't last. I wouldn't mind at all if they were all gone for good this minute. But I'm with chad that it shouldn't be a matter of the governments to take it down, even though I know they are probably the only powers to put a hold on it. The companies who run those sites certainly won't kill their own business model.
