Music Vs No Music

Music or no music. Currently I have no music on any of my videos including trailers. I could understand why music should go onto a trailer but the actual members video, I’m not so sure about. What is your opinion. Does anyone have any sales info they could share. Did you see an increase or decrease in sales by adding or removing music particularly in trailers? Thanks!

By adding music you are giving the surfer something else 'not to like' Its highly unlikely that you music choice will be the same as a surfers. Therefore unless you feel a particular clip needs it, I wouldn't waste your time and money having a porn track created for you.

That said if you do chose to go that path, I have a very good musician who will create about 2hrs of music for your at a very reasonable rate.

We have our own backing track that goes from low energy to cum shot speed and I think we have used it twice when there was a soundtrack distortion problem on our original tape.

i think it depends on the videos. i have seen 30 minute videos where no one makes a sound except in the last few seconds, and the right music would have been a big help.

on the other hand, i've seen movies with spectacularly inappropriate music gor the scenes - funny silent movie/cartoon type music or classical guitar arpeggios. eek!

I did an informal poll a while back and the single most annoying factor in porn, according to my readers: by far, way, way above everything else, was music.

Personally, I have to say, I agree.

Then again, I had a few friends over last month and they said their biggest porn peeve was guys who were very quiet... so I appeal to all of the producers: Tell your boiz to let their love noise out! Holler, scream and moan, baby! We wanna hear ya enjoyin yoself!

It's my personal opinion that nine times out of ten the music is more distracting than the more "natural" sounds that occur during sex(i.e. moaning and groaning). I guess maybe a middle of the road approach could work. Some music (music..not 70's bad porn soundtrack) in the background would help subtly fill in the quiet areas and also help drown out the whispered commands of the director!

When VHS caught on in the early 80's, producers took all the old footage shot on film and made compilation tapes. Since the film loops were all silent, they needed to add something, so they added whatever music they could get ahold of.

That's probably the only reason people have gotten used to music during sex scenes. Everyone hates it, but they've just become accustomed to it.

The other thing to remember is that when you do use music in porn, make sure you have the legal rights to use it.

I see so many movies using illegally downloaded music as soundtracks its unreal, all it would take is for one of the record companies to realize you are using a song illegally and you are basically fucked.

Annoying music is the single biggest complaint we get from members, . We rarely use music now except for intros and outros to the videos. However, I always use music on trailers. It makes them more exciting, I think.

I only add soundtrack music if absolutely necessary... quiet models, no sound recorded during the shoot, to cover background noise, etc. and keep the volume low. To avoid having to use music to fill the void, I'll often loop in sex noises (balls slapping butts, moans, "fuck me harder", etc.) from other parts of the video.

Also, use only stock music. Don't think Madonna will be flattered to find out her latest single is featured on your porn epic.

I have heard a couple producers say they get positive comments about using music. Overwhelmingly, everyone else (producers, customers) says the opposite.

We've considered doing one of our DVDs or website scenes with a dual soundtrack (one with music and one without) and see what sort of response we get. I suppose that would be the only way to know for sure.

I also agree with Patti and wildwest about natural sound... and believe me, getting some of our twinks to make sounds is quite the challenge. A couple times I've had to remind them we're not shooting silent films My guess is, with the younger ones, they are used to living in a dorm room or at home where they learned to be silent and that carries over.

One other way to look at it is that adding music could "up" the artistic value of the production, and be a big help if you ever face the Miller Test. :chef:

We do not use music in ours, except in the trailers. We used too, but too many people complained. I for one, when facing music in a video, just hit mute. So I would leave it out.

We get great response to the music in our videos. As long as it is appropriate and moves the scene along, it makes great sense to use it. It also helps the pace of the edit. But then again, it all depends on the style of video that is being produced. I have one great 'bow chicka bow wow' 70's porn track that I have been waiting to use for a retro shoot we are doing this spring (village people mustaches and the works). Music is pretty critical to what we do at Manifest. The royalty free music selections that can be licensed are pretty extensive. Sometimes is works as an understated score, sometimes to create muscle music video you can jack off to. Like anything, do it well or don't do it at all. The wrong music choices have created some pretty funny scenes!

I agree with the majority here. I really don't like 9 out of 10 music selections found in the videos. There are some who do it right, but I think it is a lot of work to find that match, that perhaps just doesn't make it worthwhile.

I'd leave the music out.

actually i will say that Pat, our editor, does use music in most of our promos for our DVDs and some of our longer promos for Boyfunk. In the right setting the music can definitely be an enhancement, and the Miller test issue is an intersting point to be considered as well.

Part of the issue is if we were to do music, I'd want to really do it well, match the editing to the music and so forth, and that would add a lot of additional time to the editing process. It may end up being a good competitive advantage though and we really should at least consider it
