A patent lawyer is the only truly specialized lawyer I know. In any other area of law, any lawyer can hang his shingle and start practicing but patent law requires an engineering degree and passing the patent bar exam. In every other area of law, you need:
1. A bachelors degree in anything -- it could be 12th Century Chinese Theater
2. A law degree
3. Pass the Bar Exam

For Patent law, you must have:

1. A bachelors degree in engineering
2. A law degree
3. Pass the Bar Exam
4. Pass the Patent Bar Exam
