Does it? How old were you in 1985? Do you know what it was like in Harvard back then? Black people only got the very basic of civil rights in the 60's and 70's and by the 80's were still fighting to be accepted by our society. People love to talk about how we as gay people are treated as second class citizens in today's society but don't forget what it was like for the black community as recent as 20 years ago. And in 1985 Michelle Obama's parents were most likely at an age where they would have seen first hand the effects of segregation, having had to drink from a blacks only water fountain or ride at the back of the bus. So growing up in a world like that it's not hard to imagine being a black woman in what was at that time a historically white only school and feeling that she was being treated differently.
Oh, and btw, this post isn't even about Obama. It's totally about the idea that someone would read into a 23 year old paper to make conclusions about what a person thinks and feels today.
