We recently hired two new video editors.

When we advertised for Pat's position in 2006, we had about 25 applicants.

The most recent posting got us close to 200 applicants... and the scary part was, many of them were grossly overqualified, including at least 3 or 4 tech director/editors from local TV news stations, a guy who had worked on two Oscar-nominated films, and various others with 10+ years experience. (We didn't hire any of those, since we knew they'd be gone as soon as anything better came along.)

The majority of the applicants were at least marginally qualified. Maybe 20 or 30 of them were totally unqualified, and a dozen didn't even read the ad at all, and sent a generic resume for customer-service or retail related positions.

But the sad part is... it's amazing how many of them sent a resume, but no cover letter, or a crappy generic cover letter that showed no real motivation. In this economy, people who don't make a real effort to stand out simply aren't going to get hired, and it seems that most people either don't understand this or don't care enough to put the effort in.

If I ever needed to grow beyond a one-man shop, the deal maker in hiring - on top of qualifications - would be how good he looked working in the nude!
