What's the deal with these comments on my blog??

hey porn peeps,

i know i already touched on this subject a while back, but i am getting about 100 comments/day (spam) on my blog. as fast as i edit/approve them, i get that many more! should i keep doing this, or erase them or what? it is very overwhelming!!

also, why am i getting a bunch more all of a sudden? is this a good thing or bad thing?

Do you have Akismet activated? If not, I'd certainly do so. Just follow the link they have there telling you that you need an activation key after you activate the program in your Plugins. You just WANT AN ACCOUNT, not a website, so be sure to read what is on the screen before you go clicking.

You will get an email with an activation key that you can use forever on every blog you setup. Put that Login Info and Activation number in a safe place. .... 'cause it's a bitch to find it again on the website! LOL I have a Rolodex card with the information, as well as a Word.doc on my drive in my WordPress folder.

There is a plug in that I added which includes a simple math question. It immediately wiped out my spam and I only have a couple a day from really determined people.

As for why you've seen a rise, it could mean that your site visibility in SE's has dramatically increased, or that your site is on a "hit list". If you're not publishing them, I'm guessing it's the first reason. You should check your analytics to see if CTR has increased, or filter your stats to see what the SE's are doing for you now.

What does Akismet do exactly? I keep seeing it and ignoring but I've been getting cycles of low and high spam posts to approve as well lately...

I just mean checking the traffic of all the Search Engines in analytics. I had a spike in sales for BlokeToys recently and couldn't find out what had changed. A cursive look at my stats didn't show anything unusual, but digging deeper I found hits from Yahoo and Bing have risen while traffic from another site dropped (giving the illusion that nothing had changed in total traffic).

It could just be that one or two of the SE's are suddenly sending you a lot more traffic, which usually means a lot more spam to go with it.

Glad you've got on top of it though. I still need to take action on a couple of my blogs, but I'll get around to it... eventually

It blocks spam, usually the kind that is generated by the spam bots. Activate it and you'll have more time to actually have a life other than monitoring your blogs and removing hundreds of inane spam comments manually.
