I got my very first organic backlink by complete accident. I emailed the admin of a favorite site of mine asking if I could use some of their pictures in a future post. After I made that post, he made one of his own that linked back to my page... and then he did it again a month later! So luck plays a part, too; you just have to put yourself out there.
