Yes the gradient on the back blends too much in with the skin
tone of the guy.
The first thing that I saw when I looked at it was that HUGE text.
I would work on the text and change it. I would also change
the background of that gradient and maybe doing it metal/chrome.
The bolts and stuff look good it goes with theme of MUSCLE=STRONG=BOLT.
I think those guys on the thumbs back there are hot but you
don't really notice them when you see the image at first. Bring em up.

imo, a little texture on top of the gradient can make a noticeable difference. would help alleviate the blending in of his skin tone to the gradient.
For some reason, I'm literally "seeing" the site title last in both of the samples. I'd try a different font or give that one a different treatment. I also agree the background table should have some texture added to it to help give it depth and pull the pics up a bit. I'd also take the big fella on the right and do a slight "darken" and up the contrast on it a little to give him a more ebony coloring and sheen.
I don't think it need to be overhauled. The second does look better, but I would make the title a little smaller because it makes the images behind it look insignificant. Bec's idea of darkening the guy on the right is great and maybe you can have the background gradient lightened a bit. That should make the title and images pop a little bit more.
