this is called parody
I won a lawsuit against Lucasfilm for one of my movie called Starballz where the main character looked like dragonball , the court decided that it was a parody protected by the first amendment . So on the legal side , let say that I am covered . On the moral side , here in Japan , there is 7 floors shop selling exclusively parodies comics ,videos and games of famous anime character . These shops are everywhere in the open in Tokyo and it's a sign of popularity for an artist to get his character on the parody (doujinshi) market . So to answer your question , this is how they feel about that .
Let me also remind you that others went the same route from mel brooks spaceballs to porn flicks like natural born fuckers .
