When Newbies Attack...

So i had an affiliate request some retro content to use on their blog a day or two ago for my retro porn sites, got the request on new years eve i think it was by PM on here.

Pulled the images for him and then he was asking why i didnt group the content together by 'scene' and also have 15-20 pics per 'scene'.

Despite the fact that 99.99% of retro content available for online use didnt come and to my knowledge has never come packaged as 'scenes' most of the image sets dont contain more than 2 or 3 pics of the same model because this type of content, especially the black and white retro stuff from the 60s and 70s is primarily created from old photo scans where the content was originally used in print publications.

Not to mention at this time, the producers of this content had no reason to create 'scenes' as we know them today because the internet wasnt even invented yet.

So now i have an affiliate posting on another board that i 'should know better' and be providing vintage content with 15-20 images from each 'scene' even though that is impossible to do, im just going to hop in my personal time machine and head back to the 60's to make sure the photographers create sets of their content for use 50+ years in the future.

You gotta love when newbies attack.

I hate people like that, why didn't this affiliate just ask you to make up his blog postings for him, sheesh!

Im actually not worried about that, i think the guy was more concerned that i was intentionally not giving him what he wanted, it just kinda irked me that even after explaining *WHY* i couldnt do what he wanted, he made the post on another board.

I do think a lot of newer webmasters dont understand the nuances between different business models being used, those programs that have exclusive content shot for them, can pretty much do whatever they want to dilute the effectiveness of their content, unfortunately those of us who license content, arent as able to dilute it across the web.

I'm the affiliate. I'm not ungrateful and I didn't say you should know better, 'cause I didn't identify you in the other post. It was just a frustrating experience and I vented (complete with tags). And I posted the original message on the other board before you explained the situation to me, not after. After you explained it I posted another message saying I had discussed it with you further and it was sorta understandable.

But look... it's about the management of expectations... You asked me what I needed, I spelled it out and mentioned that I needed things packaged by scene. I deal with a lot of other programs and 95+% of them give the content scene-by-scene. The ones that don't are usually smaller amateurish programs (which is not how I'd describe you). You asked a ton of questions and we went back and forth numerous times - a lot was said but you never mentioned that the content wasn't scene based until after you gave it to me...

I clearly didn't understand that retro content isn't scene based. I get it now, but how is someone supposed to understand that if they haven't dealt with retro stuff before? It's not like retro material is all that common.

And how is being a newbie a bad thing? We all start somewhere and if you look at my posts on that other board you'll see I know a hell of a lot about websites - it's just the porn industry that I'm getting a handle on. For god's sake, I've written myself a custom database to deal with sponsor images (which is up to about 40,000 images so far - not something many "newbies" have), and the real problem was that the way you gave me the images didn't mesh well with how I handle images in the database.

I checked in to see if you had forgotten about the request because it had been a couple days since you said you'd have it to me and you were actively posting here, so I knew you weren't off on vacation or something... You make my checking in sound like a bad thing. Again, it's about the management of expectations. If you had said "give me a week", I wouldn't have checked in until the week was up.

I've looked at the Condom Cash site and you provide one photoset for each site where the programs I do well with have multiple photosets for each site. And just because the retro stuff isn't scene based doesn't mean it can't be organized into themes or something. So when it comes down to it you're not making it all that easy for me to promote you. That surprises me and it was sorta the point of the post on the other board.

I can sell your stuff, I want to sell your stuff, but you make me jump through a lot of hoops to do it. That's really the bottom line here and the root of my frustration. I had a blowout with the owner of another site that was perfect for my niche but was converting horribly because I didn't have decent promo materials. He basically told me I didn't know shit and that his site was obviously too sophisticated for my viewers' tastes (or something like that). Well, he's since hired an affiliate manager who puts out good materials and the site is now one of my top converting sites.

Please remember all this started because I wanted to promote your sites. I'm not the enemy - far from it. But it has been a frustrating experience getting the materials and thinking about what I need to do to use them. I vented without identifying you. That's not a horrible thing.

Agreed and as i said, i wasnt bothered about having to explain this to you or get the content, i was just concerned that you felt like i was deliberately not trying to give you what you requested because that is how your post read on another board to someone else, who sent me the link, after i had spoken to him earlier about your request.

No harm, no foul on my side of things, at least now we have had a chance to see the point of view from each side and think we have a better understanding of both of our situations in this case :)

No, that was never the case... :)

But some programs are more affiliate friendly than others, and sometimes (often?) that comes out of what they have to work with. I think this whole experience really drove that home to me - I see how people with exclusive content are just "better" from an affiliate's (my) perspective. That's out of the scope of the retro issue, but still sorta related...

why can't retro sites do screengrabs of the full sized videos and offer those as content - both to surfers and affiliates? that way, there will be enough pics to use for blog collages.

I don't know much about licensing content, but it would seem logical to me that given the way that sites are marketed these days, one could go to the licensor and try to negotiate rights to produce screencaps from retro content... for that matter, if the licensors themselves spent a few bucks and made some nice screencaps and had them cleaned up by a good retoucher, I'd think that would be worth a premium amount in licensing fees.

Of course, that's operating under the assumption that the people licensing the content are logical people who understand business, which might be a questionable assumption :)
