Ghandi really was boring. It wasn't even inspiring. Ghandi was a great man who, in my opinion, deserved a better movie than THAT one. That one came off like a slogging, long TV movie.

E.T. at the time was just unbelievable. It took you on an emotional rollercoaster and had you laughing and (sometimes) crying. It was the BEST there was at the time and I'm not sure how anyone could deny it.

The Academy LOVES to honor "important" films. If there's a message involved--or if it is about someone important like Ghandi--chances are it will win over science fiction or comedy for sure.

Did any of the really important films EVER WIN? Like the 1932 King Kong was not even nominated, or the Wizard of Oz. These elitist would not know the Best Picture of any given year if it bit them in the ASS. With their track record of predicting what films really where the best of any given year I really do not see why anyone would really care what they think.

PS Ghandi was on cable last night, and I can say after watching most of it SUCKED a big hard DICK

Well, The Wizard of Oz was up against Gone With the Wind, which was quite a good film as well. That one's a tough call.

As far as King Kong... I don't know... I don't know that I would call that Best Picture material.

Lord of the Rings won, though. That was deserved. :)

I was shocked that Lord of the Rings did win, I actually liked that movie. How could anyone not think King Kong was not the best movie of its year 1933, or Jaws for that matter. Unless you want to change best picture into best art film them maybe I can get behind it.

The reviews for the Wizard of Oz were brutal. It was called stupid and depraved. One review even claimd it was unimaginative!

Even now I look at that movie and I'm impressed ... and intriqued by the urban legend that you can actually see an actor who committed suicide hanging in the background of one of the scenes!
