yes! its been 6 or 7 years for me (can't remember when exactly)
I had smoked for 30 years! and, had smoked a couple of packs a day since day one.
I just quit! no gimmicky potions or patches or anything - I just stopped!
and I figured that each day would get better - and it did - each day was easier - I didn't buy any cigs anymore and I didn't lurk near doorways anymore or hang with the stinky smokers anymore - I just quit
I think there is way too much fretting over the "what ifs" and the fear of quiting -
YOU JUST DON'T SMOKE ANYMORE - THAT'S IT!
also...
Now of course, you must keep one thing in the back of your mind during all of this, you must understand that you never, ever want to go through the process ever again... so naturally, you can't start up...
and...
get yourself a little piggy bank or something and start putting that change into that sucker every day - in about a year or so, you'll have enough to do a lot of stuff to celebrate on your first anniversary!!!
good luck!!! its easier than you think
and don't get fooled by my cigar, it was a prop!
yup - cold turkey is always best, whether on a nice double-crust rye, or a multi-grain.
Just keep reminding yourself just how shitty the taste & smell are, as well what it's done to your clothes; house; teeth, fingers and car. In addition to the many pleasures it's robbed you of, such as what food really tastes like and what it's like to run, for miles and miles (or do anything physically demanding, with out panting).
Now think of what it's given you. Things like feeling of alienation each time you go for a butt, and how much money you've pissed away!
I quit over two years ago and I'll never go back.
Thanks for the advice guys.
Yeah i couldnt be bothered with all those gymics like the patch and chewing gun, i just went cold turkey. I honestly think that if you want to quit enough you dont need those things and i guess i do.
Dont say ive quit - say i dont smoke!
The people I know that have successfully quit have usually found there are two aspects, one being the physical addiction and the other the psychological aspect (having something to do with your hands, something to put in your mouth, etc).
The physical addiction goes away in about 2-3 days, but there's a period of about 2 weeks where the nicotine receptors are still somewhat active. The receptors are created when you start to smoke and *never* go away so the important thing is to know that (for most people) if you've quit for 20 years and have one or two cigarettes, you reactivate the receptors and the addiction is back full force.
What several friends have done for the psychological aspect is to keep some licorice sticks around, made from real licorice flavoring (fennel). There's something in the fennel that calms or satisfies the nicotine craving, and having the licorice sticks in your hand or in your mouth helps to substitute for the cigarette. Or so my friends have told me.
Hope that helps.
When I quit, I also quit cold turkey.
I found it was helpfull to keep something else in my mouth. (Use your own imagination there.)
Be carefull though...when I quit, I gained like 80 pounds...
If I had to do it all over again, I would still quit cold turkey...but replace the candy and other food stuffs with a fat cock. Then again, maybe I should have just had carrots. Either way might have helped. Losing those 80 pounds has been a struggle, and no, I am not there yet.
If you need one more thing to boost your will to quit, go visit a lung cancer patient at the hospice in the final few days. Watching my Aunt die while still sucking down that last cig was enough for me to give it up.

Gaining weight is a worry of mine to. I like carrots though so sounds like a good solution. Iv actually been using water last couple of days lol, when i REALLY need one i have just been drinking like 2 pints of water which makes me feel less bad lol. Its also probably helping because of the amount my palms are sweating lol
The other thing that has helped some people is to buy some niacin tablets (vitamin B2, I think) Niacin is nicotinic acid, which is somewhat chemically related to nicotine, so I'm told... but nonaddictive, won't feed the nicotine addiction, but will help the nicotine receptors in your brain be satiated. Don't take more than 100-200mg at a time, take them with food, otherwise you might get a harmless but annoying "flush" (you feel like some part of your body is burning up for about 10 minutes.)
Kudos on quitting!!! I know how bad addictions can be even though I haven't smoked in my life. I applaud anyone who quits smoking! If you need some instant moral support, try hitting me on ICQ anytime - I'll keep your fingers busy typing ;)
go visit a patent in hospital on a lung machine that was caused by smoking. then imagine that being you in 10 years.
LOl yup day 4. It does get easier. I have been eating lots though. Its ok, i spent 3 hours at the gym :shades:
Thanks for the support everyone
What worked for me was doing more cardio (which really underscored how badly out of shape I was) and just walking through the city looking at the people who smoke.. how bad their skin looks and how tired they look and hot stupid the actual act of smoking looks.
That did it.:cigarette:
Just do it. That's my advice. Will yourself to not smoke and it will happen. The key is that you have to really WANT to stop.
Don't eat more, don't drink more. Try chewing gum if you need to. But it's not going to be easy. You just have to be stronger than your desire to pick up a cigarette.
You're doing something AWESOME for yourself. My hopes are with you. Best of luck.
*sigh* is it crazy to admit I actually miss smoking?
but I know its much better for me not to smoke, not to mention its much better on my wallet!
I found when quiting smoking, that I had to break a lot of routines, even ones not entirely related to smoking... like not drinking or eating something which I usually followed with a cigarette, or not going out to bars or clubs for a little while.
good job and congrats!
I just quit cold turkey and started working out more when I started feeling bad. The only problem I have now is smoking when I drink and I am getting better at not doing that. It's hard but you can do it :)
Congrats on getting this far...I stayed off them with Zyban/Wellbutrin, but went back later...didn't really wanna quit at the time though hehe.
Good luck
I try to figure out what are the BENEFITS of smoking. Does it give you a high at all? What is it about them that would make anyone want to try them in the first place. If it doesn't give you some kind of high, all that DEATH and stuff REALLY doesn't seem worth it.

have you tried the cold lazer treatement?
Has anyone tried that? I hear it works great.. but is easy to fall off.. only good thing is that you get free 'treatements' for the year after your first one
