You know, as a man, i really shouldnt have ANY input on this whole abortion issue, in fact, no male should because it doesnt really affect us one way or the other, let the women decide, on their own, if they want to ban abortions or not.
Regards,
Lee
The final nail in the coffin for the Reps. this election :bunny:
Every individual has the right to decide what happens to their own body, to consider anything else seems odd.
It is sad that USA politics affects gay adult. HOW does abortion affect me as a Gay webmaster? Let me say here... my husband will NOT be a father of my child.
Damnit! I have been trying to get guys pregnant for years!!!
Problem is, we're stuck with a bunch of losers on the Supremes until they die or retire... we've got intellectual giant Clarence Thomas, and right wingers Alito and Roberts.
Hopefully, enough losers will retire/get sick/something to tilt the balance back, assuming that the loser Republicans don't steal the election again.
Actually it would appear that the sign is totally accurate. Wish I had thought of it. They should also add:
Kill innocent Iraqi's.
Kill innocent american troops for nothing.
Fight Civil Liberties.
Gay Bash someone.
Vote Republican!
Republicans represent and in most cases ARE everything that is wrong with America.
it is so wrong for anyone to tell someone else what to do with there body!!! But we all know that the fing church is running this country now.
rome says jump and bush says yes master how high?
So what happens if and when Rudy Giuliani, an ardently pro-choice Republican, gets the nomination for President in 2008?
Will you just have to find new bromides?
Steve
Actually, Squirt, my opinion is that both political parties employ methods of what you characterize as "polarization" ... the Democrats have likewise immediately played such cards since reclaiming Congress (e.g. raising the minimum wage, allowing airport security officials the ability to collectively bargain, etc for the labor unions)
And interest groups on all sides love to scare their audiences so they can shake them down for money. (Human Rights Campaign, People for the American Way, Family Research Council, the NRA etc.)
I'm actually not at all a fan of strong political parties, and I think people give "parties" too much credit in the United States. That's also why I prefer the US system of electing representatives compares to other countries where the voters essentially go to the polls and elect a party from which some hack is selected to go make law.
In the US, there are Democrats who are pro life like Harry Reid or Joe Lieberman, or Republicans who are pro choice like Guiliani or the governors of California and Hawaii --- your representative is much more representative to their constituents and you get lots more variations.
Steve
I'm independent. The last few years have been a wake up call for me personally both because of the current administration and living overseas, I now have a much broader perspective of where things are, and what Americans are being fed as "where we are".
I agree with your last post. Nobody is black and white and rep vs dem is getting old as dems being in office really haven't done what the majority wants them to, in the way they want them to, with the speed they want them to. I do have to give kudos to Pelosi for her recent trips. Yes it's been grandstanding etc, but it gives hope to other countries that we can retain some decorum in the future.
But Steve you have to admit that our current president created a polarized nation with his rhetoric, refusal to acknowledge public opinion, and, amongst many others, statements like "if you're not with us your against us". If it was a democrat I'd have the same opinion.
Good leaders unite their people and empower them. Are good leaders for amending the constitution to take away peoples rights?
I completely disagree - I think that on the woman's side, by consenting to engage in sex with him, knowing the possible risks involved (pregnancy etc) that she enters into some sort of social contract that makes them equally responsible for what comes out of it. (both for decision making and financially)
Think about it this way, if she chose to keep it - she can hold him responsible to pay for it. So why can't he hold her into keeping it on the same grounds? They both new the possibilities and they still "entered into the contract" all the same.
"ban abortion; make raped women have babies; vote republican"
I question who made the sign and what the motives were. Anyone in his right mind who seriously wants to debate public policy frames his positions in a way that makes them sound appealing, good and right. If it were a "serious" sign, it would normally say something link "protect all unborn children; vote republican".
Or may I reframe the two sides as anti-choice vs. anti-life; pick your side of the issue!
I've seen people nearly come to blows over debates sparked by bumper stickers
thats why I'm afraid to put a bumper sticker on my car impeach the president
it should read
If you hate poor and middle income vote republican
The sad fact is, people are stupid. Dumb women are getting pregnant every second to just have an abortion later to get rid of it. Innocent women are getting raped every second, should they be forced to have a baby that will only remind them of that trama for the rest of their life? There is no right or wrong answer to this problem because it should be a case by case basis, not one over-ruling policy to govern every scenario. By forcing a white trash couple to have their baby only to raise it into poverty and warp the child beyond belief to only repeat the cycle once he hits puberty? is that really what we want either?
It's one of those debatable topics that has no solution, no persuasion, no closure. There are two sides of the fence, at the end of the debate, there are still two sides and everyone is perfectly comfortable on their side. There's nothing anyone can say to sway their decision one way or the other, same with politics, same with religion. I will never voice an opinion on abortion because like others, I will never be involved in one. Who am I to force a woman to do anything with her body, let alone something as life changing as "have a baby or not". This should be a decision for them, the victims and people who fall into this category, not beaurecrats with their own agendas and PR campaigns.
Regardless, i did find the sign amusing :p
One of my close friends of 20+ years is a "rape baby"
He is an Awesome guy who has his life together, is in medical school and everyone falls in love with him and his personality. But... his childhood wasn't the best. His mother didn't "love" him as a normal child and it took her quite a long time to overcome the idea of him being a product of one of the most traumatic situations in her life.
Today, they are close and she loves him to death. However, the situation being - and he will tell you "I'm not a product of love"
No matter what is said here, it should be up to the women, not some men in robes or some Christian right winger says so.
As the only woman I see responding to this post, I am in total agreement with Ethan. It would be my choice and my choice period and I would never allow the government to make that decision for me. It's not to say I would not allow the father to participate in that decision.
I'm also not saying that I would run out and have an abortion either. I simply want to retain the right to make a final decision that will directly effect my body, my health, my life and the life I may or may not be able to provide for that child, as well as the circumstances that I became pregnant in the first place.
That's my thoughts on the matter!
Oh I also agree with Chad, "He has been trying to get guys pregnant for years"!
:)
How does that saying go? The next antichrist will come cloaked in a robe hiding behind a cross? I can't remember
The anti Christ is here now he is in the white house and his right hand mans name is dick Chaney, and his helpers are the republicans in congress and the senate
Well put, Lisa. That's exactly how I feel on the matter.
Nobody likes abortion, even those who are pro-choice. It's not like people think, "Oh, if I forget to take my pill or use a condom, I can just run out and get an abortion."
Abortion is a necessary "evil."
I think that men should be allowed to participate in the debate for theological purposes, but they should have no right to enact laws regarding a woman's right to choose what happens to her body.
I want kids. I always have. If I was a guy who got a woman pregnant (Hey, it could happen!), I would be heartbroken if she had an abortion. And if she did not consult me in the matter, I would probably never speak to her again, because I do have a right to at least know about it and voice my opinion.
So, as a gay man, you wonder "what relevance does abortion have for me?"
Plenty, my friend. Homophobia and sexism go together like red beans and rice. Those who want to curtail women's reproductive rights are rarely friends to gays and lesbians either.
Just my two cents...
