Is The Bar Set To Low To Enter The Adult Industry These Days?

Your thoughts?

I mean it pretty much seems like just about any Tom, Dick or Harry can enter the adult industry and call themselves a webmaster these days, whether they have fiscal security or not.

Domains are cheap as chips, hosting can cost less than a StarBucks coffee (or even free from some sponsors), traffic is pretty much easy to come by if you spend 10 minutes reading the boards, sponsors will pay you anywhere from $15-$150 per trial signup, content is free or very cheap, etc etc

What do you folks think about this, should there be some kind of entry level, above what there is now in the industry for new individuals wanting to come in to it?

Perhaps if there was, we'd all be making money like the good ol' days again $0.02

I'm all for competition and there's ample money to go around, though somedays, it would be nice if more of it ended up in our coffers, but hey, it beats working for a living!!

I think the bar is too low and it is too easy to become a pornographer.

When it took some real investment -- like expensive cameras and studios and a distribution network, it was not so easy to get into the business. Now anyone with a cheap digital camera, a used PC off craigs list and a free host can put up images on the net or just use other people's content and become a webmaster. Because it is so easy to do that, there are more trying it than really should be doing it-- and some have no idea what they are doing. They will do anything to make sales, give away free hardcore porn to get a dribble of traffic, and siphon off consumers who feed the real webmasters and producers. The little hobby farmers are parasites that suck blood from the entrepreneurs trying to make a living.

I agree wih Chad. It seems like any kid with a camera nowadays can call themselves a Producer.

WOW you guys are out of the loop

All it takes to be an adult webmaster nowdays is a free blog and time to surf free content, steal it, upload it to a free host, post the content on the free blog, and signup as an affiliate to the sponsors you stole the content from :D

Let's not forget entry level adult webmasters like Maxpower that post on boards and milk them for info only to steal content from it's members and put it in the pay section of his new site :baa:

There are a lot of people with a lot of time to steal so they can make, literally, a couple hundred bucks a month.

Don't you guys realize these are the people we are dealing with these days?

Well, and what always amuses me is the new companies coming out of nowhere, with no product and no models, all with theme and variations on "We're going to produce the best, highest quality porn you've ever seen" or "We're going to be at the top of the industry within X months" or, in the extreme case, the company that insists they *ARE* the top of the industry, even though their stuff doens't sell for shit and is very low quality....

It's always amusing to talk to models who are scouted by these companies who are making grandiose promises... and a year later, there's no product, or one janky title that has sold about 100 copies... while the guys that are a little quieter are the ones busy recruiting cute models and shooting good content and *truly* "coming out of nowhere"

If people were a little more humble about it, that would be fine, but the ego that some folks have is pretty amazing.

Like a bar exam? Well, I WAS in a bar when the idea of getting on the internet hit me, so I guess I passed.

I thought we learned by now because of certain individuals that just setting up a blog - a board or whatever doesn't make you an adult webmaster as much as going to the movies makes you an actor.

there are approximately 7,000 webmasters out there in some form or another. the remaining are merely traffic bleeders.

with the 2257's and soon copyright infrigements cases starting to creep in on those that offer free content - we will still have anyone calling themself a webmaster.

I dont consider myself entry level earning a couple hundred $ a month, but i have no ego issues either, i know im not a big guy, i just earn a living and work hard!... But here is my opinion.

Everyone has to start somewhere, whether it be in porn, or web design, or heck, working as a chef? In anything, you start at the bottom and work your way up. Personally, i think porn would be a LOT less interesting if every company worked out of an expensive studio, with flashy equiptment ect....

Amateur sites wouldnt exists, and lets be honest, some of them are great!

I do think however, the influx of wannabie webmasters, who run "hobby-blogs" are to many, but in all honestly these people are in whatever industry you look at. If you run an expensive car valeting service, their is always a kid walking around houses washing peoples cars for $5!

I do have to say one thing though. On the comment that anyone with a digital camera can jump in as a producer is actually something i like. Heck, look at maxpixels! I know a number of the models on their are british guys, and a lot recently have been added by a couple of new small part time producers..... But the content is good, :) So from me its thumbs up to the little producers creating fresh content.

I agree with the people that said that everyone has to start at the bottom...otherwise this will just turn into an old boys club. I think the more people there are in the industry, the harder people will have to work (which I think some are scared to do) and also, the faster our industry will evolve.

in 1996, lots of guys with 1 webpage on a subdomain were calling themselves webmasters. in 1999, any guy with a webpage on free hosting was calling themself a webmaster. many of the people who rose to prominance started out on their free account that came with their hosting. why should now be any different?

I think the real motivation behind this thread is something close to what Brad said above. The "old boys" are scared of having to work harder to stay where they are. There always needs to be a new generation of webmaster or the industry will stagnate, simple.

I would be really interested to see someone from one of the larger companies post in this thread and hear their stand-point on this, as the people in this thread trying to run down newer webmasters both only run small CCBILL powered programs or sites.

well I have been in this industry for 11 years now - and have seen so many who sit in their parents basement - throw a blog or something together and swear they are now an adult webmaster. Unless your prepared to put some of yourself into it like cash - then you really can't classify yourself a webmaster. the Old Boys Club as was referred too are guys who have put some serious coin of their own into their business.

simply loosening the definition so that more can be called adult webmasters - they are only fooling themselves. if its that important then fine - call it what you want - but those that have put all their savings, their life and soul into creating large companies are not going to want to take time and chat with you unless you show some battle scars - otherwise - you will get a pleasant smile with a comment, "feel free to talk to anyone of my employee sales reps"

that is true - but most of those dollars they bring in they put it back into their paysite etc. merely throwing up pictures - signing up to a affiliate program makes you a mimic - not a webmaster. If so then I would have to give people like Lawrence Connor props for being an adult webmaster. He made shit, bragged alot - but no one considered him valuable as a webmaster.

Our webmasters are employees. So why so afraid for a word only. It's a job description, not more.

I think the fact is, there is nobody who can say who can or cant work in the adult industry. This can be a good and bad thing, but its true.

But the main point is, nobody should think they have the right to judge ANYONE for doing whatever job they choose. Personally, if someone is working as an adult webmaster as a full time job, paying their bills, and living life, that is their job, there business, and thats great.

Anyone who wants to knock them for it really needs to shut the hell up and mind their own business. :)

You are correct, it does say something, it says they are in the wrong business and they should be flipping burgers at McDonalds.

Im sorry but, if you cant make decent money after 6-12 months of being in the adult industry, there is something seriously wrong with what you are doing as a 'webmaster'.

For once, i agree with you :)

If it's so easy you'd think there'd be more niche's that suit those with EXTREMELY unusual tastes. Not necessariyl illegal, but deffinitely unusual.
