Just to clarify, the kids all have heard the message they're supposed to use condoms. What they haven't heard is about the actual risk of transmission, the fact that someone with a negative test result can actually be infected and transmitting HIV before testing positive (especially since most people don't get PCR tests), and what having HIV actually means in terms of day-to-day life and lifestyle. And very few of them realize that hep-C is in many cases more difficult/complicated to teach, is rising among gay men, and is transmitted via the same methods (blood and semen) as HIV. Part of the reason we added hep-C testing to the mix (along with syphillis) in 2006.
