Now, Max, I recall quite clearly you being one of the people who accused me of "over-thinking" porn and saying that it's really just all about the money. And now it seems as if you've had a change of heart and are seeing the social benefits as well? Hmmmmm???
I've said this countless times, and at the risk of having people tell me that my goals are too lofty and ambitious, will say it again and again and again. For me, being a part of the adult business is ALL about "the greater good." The reason I write at all (even about things beyond porn) is because I honestly love to turn people on to things they don't know about, but more importantly to turn them on to the things that I feel have something important to say.
Porn, to me, has always been about sexual expression and validation. But not just the validation of seeing two men have sex. That's too easy. Good porn teaches gay men (albeit subconsciously) how to relate to each other beyond chest, arm and cock size. It teaches them about their desires and their fantasies. It shows them that it's OK to be who they are.
My ultimate goal in this business is to represent actual GAY sex using people that your average gay guy can relate to. Right now I'm doing that via my writing, trying to turn people on to sites that inspire me and write about topics that I feel are of particular relevance to the sexuality of gay men. Eventually I will do this via filmed content that challenges gay men to think outside the box. I will never use gay-for-pay models, though I will use straight-identified models who honestly WANT to have sex with other men on film and who would do it with or without the paycheck attached. I will never use gym bunnies who use steroids, and I will never shoot bareback content (unless the models are a couple who only play with each other monogamously). I want to show gay men who DON'T look like Matthew Rush that they are just as hot -- and, in fact, the way I see it, MUCH hotter -- than he is, and I want to represent honest, authentic gay sex the way that most of us have it when we're not being filmed.
I want gay men to watch the porn I plan to make and feel OK with who they are instead of wishing they looked more like the guys on screen. I want them to be so enthralled with the action on the screen that they keep watching even after they've shot their loads. (And yes, it does happen, despite what EVERYONE else keeps telling me.)
In short, I want to change not only the way that gay men watch porn; I want to change the way porn is made. I want to change the way that gay men relate to and think about each other, but mostly, I want to change the way that gay men think about themselves. As far as I'm concerned, there's no greater classroom than the bedroom for gay men to learn about who they really are.
I'm well aware that MANY in the business seems to think that "nobody cares about plot or social change in porn--nobody is watching porn for the reasons you say," but I positively refuse to believe that. That mentality is for lazy thinkers who really only care about one thing: Money. If that's why someone is in the business, fine. They can shoot their content that is exactly the same as everybody else and collect their paycheck and go about their day. But that mentality has nothing to do with why porn was created in the first place, and it has little relevance to what I hope to accomplish.
I was told by my grade school teacher to "dream big," and damned if that's not what I'm doing.![]()
