You can only talk to so many people before you find out - person A only uses a Nikon and Person B only uses Canon whereas person C is an artfag who still has the polished up Brownie from the 40's and calls anything other than a vintage camera, simply not cutting it.
I fully agree in that talking to people will help in knowing where to start but in the world of photography, it's about the equipment and what you plan on doing with it.
Do you want to shoot Macro photography (real clean detail close up) - will the Digital Nikon SLR shoot Macro? Ooh, I need to buy macro lenses. Well the Camera is 1K and the Macro lenses are $300 to $2000 based on what I'm looking to do. Will I know how to use them? Do I have time to learn how to use them? Am I willing to learn the camera as well as the lenses?
Well will this walmart Kodak 5gpxl sureshot work for me? Do Macro? Need extra stuff to make Macro work? Oh, you mean it's an all in one unit for the average Joe who doesn't want to go to school to figure out?
Talking does good but going and looking at them does better. But take a list of what you want it to do so you can ask the sales person
