I had that attitude over 5 years ago and moved overseas... let me tell you.. EVERY country has major issues and CONTRADICTIONS.

When you open your mouth in a foreign country with an American accent you are judged just as a middle eastern man with a turban is judged in the U.S. Everybody is different and nobody is perfect. I'm also talking in generalizations for the sake of discussion.

But don't take my word for it. Leave everything you know searching for utopia. It's a great adventure

I definitely understand your point. And take it seriously as I know you speak from experience. No country is perfect (except maybe Holland or Switzerland ) I have been judged my whole life. I had long hair in the 80's so I was a "stoner". I have/had facial piercings in the 90's so I am a punk. I currently own/operate hardcore gay porn sites so I am a perv. So I am use to being judged by closed minded people.

Yes, it's probably a different kind of judgment being an American living abroad. But then again, I love confrontation and think debating/arguing is fun.

We have lived for extended periods in many different countries and yes...there are those who see you as a stereotype...but if you stay in a place long enough they actually see who YOU ARE...which is not where you come from but who YOU ARE.

There are "ugly American's" out there BUT most people that we interact with actually do see a difference between our fucked up government and actual individuals.

The world is a big place and borders are artificial and were created by people of power to KEEP that power.

We are all citizens of the earth and as such can travel and live wherever we have the desire (and ability) to do so.

My point WAS that American's are some of the most brainwashed people on the planet...

Simple as that. It is a BIG world. Enjoy your 80 years on this planet and don't take it to seriously.

    Peace

Just throw an 'eh' at the end of every other sentence and tell everyone your Canadian.

Sorry Sana Chan (and anyone else from the south), but I really think we should give Texas back to Mexico and let the rest of the south secede the Union. The south would wallow in it's own ignorance while the rest of the U.S. enjoyed a country without their "values" influence.

The south is also a drag on the rest of the U.S.'s economy. I've read somewhere that no southern state (except maybe Texas) contributes more in Federal tax money than it takes. In other words, Federal tax money collected in the north is funneled to the south to pay for their pubic works and social benefits.

We could live in a gun-free society where people had true freedom and real choices without the church influence. We could take care of our poor and needy and make sure everyone had excellent health care. We could fund our public works so no more bridges collapse and levies breach. We could allow adults to decide what substances they want to put in their own bodies. We could make corporations and wealthy people pay their fair share of the taxes.

Yeah, I know it's just a silly fantasy. Maybe they can just give us California and we can take that and form our Shangri-La. I do live in Texas. And there are some very smart people here. Although most of them are transplants from the north.

I'm know there are plenty of ignorant people in the north too. I've lived there as well. Again I'm sorry Sana Chan. I'm sure you are a very intelligent person. I certainly don't mean this as a personal attack on you. I'm merely speaking from my own experinces.

I am a native Texan and come from a long line of Southerners on the paternal branch of my family tree. My mothers family was driven from Russia in 1917 with nothing but what they could carry and sew into the linings of their clothing. Only to then be driven from Mexico and part of the family murdered by Pancho Villa. One half of the family immigrated to America, the rest to Eastern Europe and in less than 20 years they were nearly exterminated by the Nazis. My family has a long history of working within the system to effect change. Until the bitter end. When I read the sort of comments I am seeing here, I am saddened and disgusted at the selfishness and impotence of those who would rather run than work to change. If the desire to leave is so strong, then go. Now. Do not use the advantages that are not available everywhere to build your treasury so that you may escape. That is cowardice and an insult to those that worked so hard to get here and have served the country with honor.

I really dislike these sort of discussions because the things I read destroy the opinions I held of individuals that I believed to be rational. Yet, I can not condemn their lack of rationality when I my strongest desire is to say work to change it or get out now. Not later, but right this minute. Put your ass in steerage and head to a "better place". Live like a pauper and try to build a life for yourself in a country that does not offer you the advantages you have here.

Lee I'm not trying to pick on you or be a dick or anything but have you travelled extensively? Watched foreign TV shows? Been involved in foreign politics?

EVERY culture embeds in it's citizens virtues they feel are unique to the people that live in that country/region. EVERY culture does this. The majority of people in every culture are cattle that are brainwashed to believe they are good, virtuous people, etc. etc. This is not a uniquely American trait, it's the cornerstone of every culture, and every religion

Frankly I agree with the Texas part and I know you are not attacking me personally, but it still hurts me both emotionally and socially when people insult my heritage. It is my heritage from the way I speak to the food I eat. My dad's family came from Ireland in the 1800s and established a farm in Georgia. My dad was born and raised there and I was born in Alabama. You may think I'm a wonderful person, but everytime you say something about people from the South to another person, that person has a good chance of applying your perspective on me without getting to know me.

That was my point. If that's all you really say about one area, the person you tell is going to assume those qualities apply to everyone from there. Yeah it isn't the best heritage with all the wierdos we've produced, but there is another side to the South that most people don't look for. They would rather assume we are all confederate flag waving, shotgun toting, "ye hawing" idots who praise Jesus at every turn.

Personally I hate guns (Sana Chan collects knives), I don't have a cofederate flag anywhere on my belongs, I'm agnostic, and I don't say 'ye haw'. Though I still say "yall".

But I'm not going to continue this. It seems to be a big debate on "North vs. South" and that's a dead horse I don't want to bring up. :flogging:

Sorry guys! I may have gone too far in expressing my dislike of the south. But these are my experiences and I can't overlook them.

In my previous job here in Texas and travels to other southern states (especially rural areas), I have experienced such terrible ignorance and hatred from the locals. "You ain't from around here, are you boy?" Yes, you really do hear that! And they REALLY do call you a Yankee.

On a road trip, go into a McDonalds for lunch in any small town along the highway and feel the eyes stare at the back of your head. Turn around and catch their eyes and watch them CONTINUE to stare at you... in disgust. Southern hospitality... in my experiences, it's a myth.

Yes, there are pockets of civility in the South. Citizens of major cities and tourist destination towns seem to be much more tolerant and accepting of outsiders/minorities. But the further you get from the center of a town, the stranger it gets... until you’re ultimately in "Deliverance" territory. I have met nice people in the south but they are generally northern transplants too or educated southerners. I imagine it would be similar to meeting another expat in someplace like France. You immediately feel a bound with another expat because you both are surrounded by distrust and dislike from the local residents.

As I mentioned before, this is not unique to the south. Many areas in the north can be daunting for an outsider too. But it really is more prevalent in the south. Bigotry doesn't only exist in the south but you are more likely to experience it first-hand. And the bigotry is more 'in-yer-face' in the south.
Can you imagine something like Jena 6 happening in Vermont or Illinois?
Do you think a former Klansman would be elected to the Senate from Michigan or Minnesota?
Do you think a black man from Vermont or California would be dragged to his death by white men behind a pick-up truck? This REALLY happens in the south! It isn't media spin... it really happens!

My only regret that I have about posting my point of view is that I have hurt Sana Chan's feelings and lost Alex's respect. You both are better educated than me and have unique perspectives. And I can understand why you love where you're from. I'm originally from Minnesota and no one in their right mind should live there on the Artic tundra... but I still have a fondness for it. But suggesting to me to "put my ass in steerage" and leave is just ridiculous. Why would someone leave in poverty when they still had other options and time? I will not flee my obligations. If it ever did get so bad here, then I would. But that doesn't make me a coward, just practical.

Daw, you haven't hurt my feelings. I just wanted to make a point about what happens when you make general comments about one area. It just gets me all riled up. ^_^ It is true that the rural areas of this section of the country are down right idiots. Even I have moments where I'd like to let them talk a long walk off a short pier. I'm sorry you had to experience those morons. As you said, best to stick to the city. Some people were raised with manners.

But no, don't talk it like my feelings were hurt. I suppose I've been badgered and made fun of so much by people from outside the South I get rather defensive about it. I get everything from people talking slower because they think I'm stupid to people saying "talk Southern for me." Or they attempt to put on a Southern accent which sounds completely sterotypical. Just pisses me off. The last person to ask me to "speak Southern" got told "Fuck You" in a nice Southern Bell Drawl. :joker:

Ah don't let people get to you! Before my Minnesota accent faded a bit, I got tons of crap from people in Texas, . Of course I couldn't hear it myself but when I go back to Minnesota to visit family and friends, I burst out laughing sometimes when I hear the way they talk. They really DO sound like they could be from the movie "Fargo"!

Thanks for lumping us all in the same pot. A highly dubious generalization.

Your government wants to wipe you out...yet, you defend them. Can you say denial of reality! Really...wake up!

Americans are so fucking conservative and repressed!! They go to a shit hole like Las Vegas and think they had a good time because they can gamble. Well guess what...in the majority of the world you can gamble and it is no big fucking deal!

Yes, in some countries you can actually...OMG...pay for sex without worrying about Big Brother looking over your shoulder and telling you how bad that is!

All blanket statements are bad. I have never been treated with the amount of rudeness or intolerance that I received during my 5 years of living in the NE. I was ridiculed for my speech "Who are you, Jethro fuckin' Bodine??!" I never head the "N" word thrown about so much nor seen the hatred of jews that I saw there. Move further north and see exactly how the Canadians view their indigenous people referring to them as drunken Natives. As a southerner and a gentleman I am considered by many to be either too weak minded to be accomplished at anything or expected to be a river boat gambler and an expert shot.

Are the idiots here in 'my country', yes. Would I ever hand it over them? Never.

The idea that Southerners are the source of America's dark side is ludicrous. I grew up in the midwest and thankfully I left as soon as I could. White kids simply did NOT talk to black people. latinos were knife-wielding thugs, because "everyone knows that".

Midwestern cities are among the most racist, segregated places in America. Still. And don't get me started on Boston, where it's in the water apparently.

    Blue states my ass.
