to me, this isn't about discrimination - although i suppose it could be. to me, deciding on a designer for a commercial site should be about your wallet. besides, when it comes to people like peter at webinc, i don't know or care who turns his crank. i'm happy as long as i like his designs.
perhaps you or the folks at maxcash wanted to support the gay community, and that would be very cool. but i see someone post looking for a gay designer at least once every 2 months, and no one ever knows a good one. the very few whose work i've seen didn't impress me as to knowing the market any better, and their tours weren't sellers.
but keep in mind that i may have worked with more gay designers than i'm aware of as i don't ask people i work with whether they are str8, gay, bi or tg.
considering that most people on the straight boards market sites called "twink" with balding 30 year olds and muscular guys, and market sites called "muscle" with guys who are average sized, i'd say most people on the str8 boards may not be all that in touch with anything to do with gay
