i wouldn't go 1200 but a little narrower - you don't want your surfers to have to scroll sideways at all if possible.

my sites fills a 1200x1024 screen, but they are ment for 1600+, i see no reason to make them any smaller than that. wont have to remake them until many years now + traffic and stuff is much better on my tgps after i changed them to same size.
