In addition, since we now distribute our own product and cut out the middleman, we find our sales increased and were making more money.

However, I do agree at some point that the DVD sales are declining in the gay market but not as bad as many may think. You maybe having issue's with your own product and you maybe seeing a dramatic decline in sales with your DVDs but that doesn't mean all of us are feeling the same effects.

Furthermore, our retail sales have been increasing each month and we find that consumer's rather just purchase directly from us then go to other sites or adult video stores. Again, its still worth selling DVDs in our case...however I do agree at some point that in 3-5 years sales will decrease even for us and that is why we are making the neccasary changes. I think in this type of business, especially today, we all must be ready for change and start thinking about the future. The technology and the delivery of porn is changing very fast and aggressively. Those who can change will be around for a long time and those who can't will dissappear.
I strongly agree. All Boys distributes my movies and I am seeing the best numbers I have ever had on sales. Better than Marina Pacific and better than White Tiger.

Rob is doing an excellent job.

OK... I just wanted to make sure people know just where I stand.

DVD sales are down... they are going to disappear in about 3 to 4 years.

I was saying over two years ago at my first show in Phoenix that porn is going to be going the iTunes way... you can download one file.. watch it on your computer, watch it on your ipod, your cell phone your TV and your laptop.

There will be no hard goods at all.

    But we're not there yet.

So don't stop pressing up DVDs just yet unless you want to give me more market share. I'm perfectly happy if that's the case.

    I'm going to disagree.

Sales are down because we are still in a recession. People just are not spending money on porn. Porn on cell phones and ipods will never outsell DVD's or overtake them for the simple matter that people like physical objects.

Taking the bus may be cheaper than driving, but people will never give up their cars for the very same reason.

Plus, porn takes up memory, which has a finite amount and ultimately will slow a processor down if gone. Having a DVD in your hands does not. You can pop it in and watch it whenever you want. No buffering. No loss of memory.

DVD sales may slip and dip, but they will never completely vanish.

Black and white tv sales may slip and dip, but they will never completely vanish.

VHS sales may slip and dip, but they will never completely vanish.

Music casette sales may slip and dip, but they will never completely vanish.

Floppy disk sales may slip and dip, but they will never completely vanish.

Camera film sales may slip and dip, but they will never completely vanish.

The same line has been used in the past so many times and continues to get used and its always inevitably wrong.

You are right, porn on the iPod, cellphone, computer or whatever does use memory but, extra memory is dirt cheap these days and with large companies such as Apple, Sony and Microsoft looking at ways to get portable storage something that we will all have in our homes in the next 3-5 years, 'storage' isnt an issue at all.

Microsoft have already unveiled a new product which will be in the stores later this year that will store digital media files in a 'coffee table' type setup with touch screen technology for just $5k.

Digital media IS going to be the next physical product, it isnt going to be long before we all have a card that we swipe which takes money out of our bank accounts, logs us in to work, keeps our medical reocrds, social security numbers, etc, etc.... We're in the 21st century, not the 20th.

I already take a portable USB keychain storage device that holds 4gb with me wherever i go.

    Lee

    Let me rephrase it, then:

DVD's may go with the new wave of technology, but there will ALWAYS be a demand for an actual, physical product that you can hold in your hand instead of data on a drive.
It may be DVD, BluRay or some new technology like those mini-cd's that Agent K had the White Album on in "Men in Black."

My point is: People like to OWN things.

Well that obviously isnt the case with porn otherwise PPV/VOD wouldnt be as big as it is.

Yes, in the past people may have liked to own things, nowadays its just so much easier to download to own than buy to own, especially when we are talking about media products.

Why have shelves packed full of DVDs when you can have a device that is smaller than a DVD cover that contains the same 50+ DVD titles?

This goes back to the question why iTunes is so popular, because people nowadays want to own, but they dont want to own 'product' they want to own 'media'.

    Regards,

    Lee

I think there will always be some demand for some sort of physical media, even if it's a package with a slipsheet and a USB dongle containing the file.

People like to give gifts, and physical packages are preferred for that, and some people do definitely like to be able to hold something tangible.

Perhaps it will become a minority market, but I am confident that some form of physical delivery of media (CDs, DVDs, USB dongles, flash cards, etc) will always exist for the same reason we haven't gone completely away from books, newspapers, and magazines.

Very well put...agree with the ownership portion of this conversation, but the ownership definately has to be digital, portable content media.

we've admitted that our dvd retail sales are down - there is no question about that - again, we have lost Tower records with over 85 stores - significant yes

I'm talking Brick and Mortar - not internet

and, when you talk to our major replicators - they are also reporting that quantities are down significantly - they replicate for some of the majors (gay and straight)

we've been shopping for better per unit prices now that the replicators need more work and are more competitive

oh, and btw - our printers also print for the majors and they are also telling us that box covers are also way down....

this is a small industry and everybody talks.... we know what's going on... there are no secrets!

things are changing and we've got our seatbelts on for the bumpy ride ahead....

Recession? Not even close. In fact, if anything, the worries are about increasing inflation. The economy is growing big time, so that negates any recession. The problem is many think it is overheated and artifically inflated (again) by the tech industry.

Disposable incomes really haven't changed that much over the last few years. What has changed is the spending pattern. The consumer has become much more education and thus much more discerning when it comes to where they're going to put their greenbacks.

    DVDs are dead!

    This thread is too funny!

DVDs have been dying for a while. Fortunately, I sell aprox. 50 - 100 DVDs of mine (Sebastian Sloane Productions) and tripple that of DudeLodge and Triangle Dream titles for my business partner.

Think about it, WHY should someone buy dvds for $50 - $60 sometimes more when they can pay $10 on AEBN and watch the full movie?

EVERYONE knows dvds are dying. I run DVD stores which I'm shutting down myself and going AMVC stye. And I don't sell anything over $50 because NOBODY WANTS TO PAY THAT!

I decided to start a membership network. I have 71 sites in my membership network. And I'm making up what I'm losing in DVD Sales.

Think people, how can you make up the profit loss? Explore other ventures!

    DVD Sales Aren't Dying...

I don't think that DVD Sales are dying. I think it's the economy. Gas prices are up, the cost of living is up, just the cost to live is up.
But truthfully, I'm selling more dvds now than I did 6-7 months ago.

    DVD sales dead?

Please don't tell our customers that. We are breaking sales records almost every month with DVD sales. We have also found out the higher the gas prices go the better our sales are.

Sorry, I'm on a lot of medications right now and my mind is blah....

DVD Sales are not dying..... 1 year ago I started GetGayMovies.com it's a dvd sales site, and I use AEBN for my "vod" and I also use it somewhat to exchange traffic or send traffic to my other sites.
Anyways, 1 year ago I started it. It went great, but then I had a 2 month period where dvds died. No orders what so ever for 2 months.
Then I had an uprise for the past 6-7 months. Now I'm processing anywhere from 6-8 customer orders daily, more so on the weekends.

What I was saying about the Economy, it's just the cost of living is rising as well as we all know Gas prices are also. I live in Bethlehem PA which is about 45 minutes from Philadelphia. Gas prices here for unleaded is $4.00. I spend $50 sum to fill up our car. So think about it. That's why dvd sales fluctuate because the cost of living in most areas fluctuates.

    Am I making sense?
